Journal 7:

Frankenstein seems to be about the idea of playing god and abandoning those who don't meet your standards. Dr. Frankenstein feels he has to create life because his mother has died and he doesn't feel like anyone else can create life or deserves too. He instead tries to create life without the help of a woman and uses science to create a creature. He in a sense is playing god by creating a living creature with out the natural way of breeding. This sentence is close to analysis, but it doesn't quite reach it. You could expand here and explain why the act of procreating is divine. Could you argue that in several mythic traditions, deities prove their divinity with asexual procreation (Zeus births the goddess Athena from his head and the Virgin Birth in Christianity...). Dr. Frankenstein attempts to emulate these examples of divinity. Why is this significance?

After the creature is created and Frankenstein feels like he's made a mistake by creating an ugly, inhuman, creation he abandons the creature and leaves him to fend for himself. The Creature then learns and adapts to society, but is still to scary to be living with others and takes oust his rage of this fact by killing those closest to the Doctor. The Doctor must now confront the creature he created and abandoned and is still regretful for creating is because it does not meet the criteria he has in mind for living creatures.

These paragraphs have good summary material, but they don't quite get to analysis.

I would like to write my final paper on the topic of social rankings within the story of Frankenstein. It shows how separated the bottom and top classes really are and the prejudices that come with the superiority complex that many people in higher classes tend to have. It seems unfair and they seem to not be able to trust anyone that slightly differs from them in any way, it also reminds me of our society and I would like to compare and contrast the too.

This is a great piece!

Here is a link to the image I chose:

What I see is a complete clash of cultures with the image being looked upon by a statue. The image embodies a completely covered female which shows the thought of the Islamic teachings that women should not show their bodies and they should always be covered while the statue is of a barely covered female gazing upon the image. I feel this shows the American or European view that a woman's sexuality is a normal thing and should be embraced, while the views of the Islamic teaching is that you should remain modest and not show off your body to others.

I am interested in using Frankenstein, Mrs. Dalloway, and Maus I & II. I chose these because they were written in different periods of time and I feel like they can be used to study the similarities and differences of cultures from different time periods. I have read Frankenstein and both Maus books and have taken a lot from the stories and I also feel I can learn something new from the stories. As for Mrs. Dalloway, the story seems more about the higher class society and I feel it will be able to give some contrast from the other books.

Here are the summaries:

Good summaries and good texts! By the way, you only need to use one text for the final paper (I just want you to post three possible here).

Wow, what an interesting image. I think you can do a lot with that! Nice commentary, too.

Great topic! Class division (class bias) was a big deal during the Romantic Era (and the rhetoric and violence of the French Revolution was the fulcrum upon with it all turned). You'll also to include artwork in this analysis. Any of the French paintings we've analyzed deal with this topic ("Liberty Leading the People"...).

I don't see your Journal Five here. Let me know if you need help finding scholarly texts for your topic.
